Veterinary Externship Opportunity – Nonprofit Small Animal Clinic (Dogs & Cats)
Position Title:
Veterinary Extern
Position Overview:
Our nonprofit veterinary clinic is seeking compassionate, motivated veterinary students or veterinary technician students for an externship focused on providing high-quality, affordable care to dogs and cats in underserved communities. This hands-on learning opportunity offers exposure to animal medicine, preventive care, surgery support, client education, and nonprofit veterinary operations.
Externs will work closely with licensed veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and support staff while gaining practical experience in a mission-driven environment dedicated to improving animal welfare.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist veterinarians and technicians with patient exams, treatments, and procedures
Observe and support routine surgeries, including spay/neuter procedures
Participate in patient intake, medical record documentation, and discharge instructions
Help provide vaccinations, diagnostics, and preventive care services
Support animal handling and restraint for dogs and cats
Educate pet owners on wellness, preventive care, and treatment plans
Maintain cleanliness and organization of treatment and surgical areas

Qualifications:
Current enrollment in veterinary, or pre-veterinary program
Strong interest in animal welfare and nonprofit medicine

Willingness to learn and participate actively
Preferred Skills:
Basic animal handling experience
Familiarity with dogs and cats
Interest in working with non-profits
Schedule:
Flexible externship durations available
